Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is a discontinued, free antivirus and antispyware program developed by Microsoft for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It provided real-time protection against viruses, spyware, rootkits, and other malicious software using the same detection engine and definitions as Microsoft’s enterprise offerings. Key capabilities included automatic definition updates via Windows Update, on-demand and scheduled scans, behavior monitoring, quarantine and remediation tools, and a lightweight, unobtrusive interface designed for minimal system impact. It required genuine Windows and was intended for home users and small businesses.
Status and availability: Microsoft retired Security Essentials alongside the end of support for Windows 7. It is not available for Windows 10 or Windows 11 and no longer receives platform or security intelligence updates. For modern Windows versions, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Security) is built in and actively supported.
Security Essentials is developed by Microsoft. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 4.1, 4.3 and 4.4. The name of the program executable file is msseces.exe.
